Deep in debt to
beat the prices

WHILE other
Europeans are out demonstrating over rising prices, in Cyprus people appear to
be borrowing more than ever before, either to stay afloat or to keep themselves
in the style to which they are accustomed. Latest Central Bank figures show that
at the end of April, Cypriot households were in debt to the tune of some 17
billion, 20 per cent up on April 2007, and the highest figure ever. Just over 7
billion of that relates to housing loans. The remainder relates to consumer
credit and other loans. Between January and April this year, over 200 million
worth of new consumer loans were issued, compared to only 14 million in the
same period last year.At the same time inflation is running at 4.9 per cent,
food has risen 6.0 per cent, electricity 13 per cent, petrol 16 per cent, air
travel 10 per cent and restaurants and cafιs 7.8 per cent.Yet fuel consumption
in Cyprus is up between four and five per cent so far this year, the sale of
electrical goods is up 30-40 per cent, holiday bookings are up 15 per cent,
credit card spending 25 per cent, and people are shopping and eating out as
usual.Bank deposits by householders are also up, totalling 22.6 billion at the
end of April. However, much of the deposits are comprised of loans, according to
the Central Bank.The growth rate for deposits stood at 12.9 per cent in April
year on year, slightly higher than March, and lower than Februarys 13.8 per
cent.An official at the Central Bank explained that the figures meant that loans
were effectively financing deposits. He said they had been observing an upward
trend in this area. We have had a slowdown on the growth rate of deposits, but
its still quite high, the official said. The growth rate for loans is also
pretty high, he added.Economist Stelios Platis said much of the problem related
to the financial system.
Its cushioning the blow. Money is quite cheap. In fact it has never been this
cheap. This gives a misleading sense of security and wealth, he said.Although
he didnt think there was a huge crash coming, Platis said: We are approaching
the danger zone. People are living on loans, and the tendency is widespread.
Just because the banks are giving it away, it doesnt mean people have to take
it. Thats why there is no change in attitude.A spokesman for Orphanides
supermarket said, We dont see a difference in shopping habits. Neither are
people spending less, while Consumers Association Chairman Petros Markou
warned the public they must stop living beyond their means.We will have to make
the changes whether we like it or not because we wont have the money to pay,
he said. We are buying too many things and things we dont need and we have to
come to our senses and change our habits.But Athos Agapitos, a member of the
Green Party executive council and a Municipal Councillor for Strovolos, doesnt
see that people are willing to change their ways. On TV, we see people
demonstrating all over
Europe.
We just accept what comes and keep on going. We are living on loans from the
banks and think we are financially secure, but soon when the banks come to get
their money back we will realise the extent of the problem, he said.
